Autumn's best hikes

Birch turns gold, blueberry leaves burn red and the crowds go home. Five short walks for the quiet season.

October is our favourite month. The light is low and golden, the mosquitoes are gone and the cabins smell of woodsmoke. These five walks are all under four hours and all end somewhere warm.

  1. Gaustatoppen: a short, steep summit with views over a sixth of Norway.
  2. Rondane, Peer Gynt hytta to Smiubelgen: wide plateau, wild reindeer in the distance.
  3. Lysefjord rim: a quiet alternative to Preikestolen.
  4. Finse, BlÄisen glacier edge: blue ice and the first snow.
  5. Nordmarka, Kikut: forest lakes an hour from Oslo.
